Little Bitty's end of year party

Comments
Little Bitty's class had their end of year party on Wednesday. They had bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and sandboxes with buckets and toys (just right for a class of 3-4 yr olds). He didn't even realize we were there at first. Finally I knelt down by him, gently touched his arm, and said hello, but he still didn't look up or acknowledge me. So I just started playing in the sand next to him and eventually he looked up and noticed I was there. He gave us a big smile and a "hi!"

He must really like the sand because usually there's not much that can keep his interest when there's bubbles around. Eventually he did move on to the bubbles for a while, but then it was back to the sand.

They had some frozen ice-pops (the kind in the plastic tubing that you push up as you eat them) and he tried it but made a big face about it. He doesn't like anything that is too cold... but I was impressed that he gave it a try.
After the party we checked him out a little early and took him to the park to hang out while we waited until it was time to go pick up Cuddlebug and Bearhug. He loves to swing, so I pushed him on the swing for a while until it was time to go.

End of the school year

Comments
Cuddlebug and Bearhug had their end of year party at school this past Friday. I took the afternoon off from work so dh and I could go. In Bearhug's class, each of the kids got up and read one of their stories. Bearhug read a story he wrote about our trip to Texas.

I had to leave his class a little early to get to Cuddlebug's party (which start 30 min later). His teacher handed out their completion certificates with a special note to teach of the kids. Cuddlebug's said "thanks for the Friday hugs," she explained that he gives good hugs but will only give her a hug on Fridays.

School is actually not out until Wednesday, this is the first time they've had their end of yr party when the school year isn't actually quite over. Hard to believe they are already almost done w/ 1st grade.

Little Bitty's end of year party is Wednesday afternoon. It will be fairly low key - bubbles and sidewalk chalk :). I'm taking the afternoon off for that one too. Wednesday evening Cuddlebug's class is having a cookout for the families so we'll be going to that. Looking forward to it!

Who put his shoes on this morning?

Comments

In the usual morning chaos, dh and I were busy making sure everyone was ready to go, I glanced at Little Bitty's feet and saw he already had his shoes on so I got his backpack ready and then the crew was off to school.

After dh picked him up from school, he asked me if I put Bitty's shoes on this morning, I said no, he already had them on so I thought you did it. Apparently he put his own shoes on this morning, only instead of his shoes, he put on an old pair of his big brother's shoes. He loves to walk around in their shoes! When dh picked him up, his teacher said something about his shoes seemed a little big today, I guess they kept falling off. Poor guy!

Guess I'm going to have to look a little closer next time to make sure he actually has HIS shoes on, lol :)

Autism awareness video

I posted this on YouTube a while back, wanted to go ahead and link to it here. This was created to raise awareness about autism. Each of our 3 sons are on the autism spectrum, so this is a topic that is close to my heart as you can imagine.

A Brief Introduction

I am the mom of 3 little boys - 6-yr-old twins and a 3 yr old. Our twins were diagnosed with autism and sensory integration disorder at age 3. Looking back, there were signs of autism from birth but we didn't recognize them at the time. We knew they were "different" from other kids but we were first-time parents so didn't always realize how different, and when we did we just attributed it to being preemies or twins or boys... until finally by age 3 we knew there was more to it than that.

They have come a loooong way since then! They are now in a regular ed class with resource support through the ASD program at school, and they have pull-out as needed for therapy, sensory breaks, or if they need a quieter environment for something that requires extra focus. They still have challenges, mostly in the areas of communication, social skills, and sensory, but they have amazing talents also.

Our little guy's development was on track until somewhere between 15-20 months, he had started to say a few words and he pointed a lot, but he lost some of those words and stopped pointing altogether. He made less and less eye contact and would rarely respond to his name. It was a gradual change, but by 22 months the signs were stacking up. We talked to his ped at his 2-yr checkup and started the process of having him evaluated. He enrolled in early intervention and was diagnosed with autism at age 2. At age 3, he "graduated" from EI to the early childhood pgm through the school. He's doing well so far, still not talking much but he is interacting more and starting to imitate, which he wouldn't do before.

My husband is a full time SAHD, and has been since our twins were 6 weeks old. His background is in education, and he does an awesome job with our boys.

The reason I started this blog is to have a place to write down all the cute, funny, and frustrating things my kids do all the time. It will be great to look back later and see all the progress they've made. Also, to raise awareness about autism. If there's one thing I'd want people to know about autism, it's that people with autism may be wired differently, but they have the same desire to be loved (however they express it), feelings, and talents just like everyone else. I truly believe that many of the struggles that those with autism and their families go through could be lessened by increasing awareness and acceptance in society.

And, in the midst of it all, you'll find some random thoughts about whatever else is on my mind at the moment, just like the title says :).

Meet the Family

This is my husband of 15 years, he's an awesome guy and a great dad to our 3 boys. He has been a full time SAHD since our twins were 6 weeks old. His background is in teaching & coaching (football) so he has lots of creative ideas for keeping the boys active and learning. He loves college football (can you say fanatic??) and keeps track of pretty much all the teams and players starting with spring practice, lol. He also enjoys playing strategy-type games on the computer, as well as wii games. He's the resident expert when the boys need help with their games (because coming to me is like asking Bitty for advice when it comes to video games!)

Before we had kids, we went to lots of movies and college football games. We had ferrets - starting with two girls, Jasmine & Mittens. When Jasmine passed away, we adopted Chloe, a cute ferret who turned out to be a boy! We kept his name, because he seemed to know it. We no longer have ferrets, and these days we don't get out much, but we still get to watch movies thanks to Blockbuster and we both enjoy reading so we take turns reading the same books.

As for me, aside from hanging out with my family I enjoy blogging, reading, watching movies and playing guitar hero :). Some books I've read recently that I enjoyed are: World War Z by Max Brooks, Duma Key by Stephen King, The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks, and The Patriot by Brad Thor. I've read all of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King and those are my all-time favorites. Dh bought The Gunslinger (1st book in the Dark Tower series), and I was bored one day so I picked it up and read it, and I was hooked. At the time, only books 1-4 had been written, so both dh and I had to wait (impatiently!) for books 5-7 to be published. As for movies, I love sci fi and action movies - if it has cool special effects, lots of pyrotechnics, and maybe some combination of martial arts, time travel or space travel involved, I'm there :). Or zombies. Dh has gotten me hooked on zombie movies, lol.

Cuddlebug is 7 yrs old and is great at reading and math. His favorite books include Nate the Great mysteries and Henry & Mudge adventures. He also loves science and is very curious about everything. He often asks me questions I hadn't thought of before, so we research them together. He also loves to express his creative side by writing stories, drawing pictures, and designing and building railroad and race tracks.

Bearhug is 7 yrs old, he and Cuddlebug are identical twins. He loves numbers and is a math whiz. Ask him about chicken nugget math, that's how he learned division. He also loves reading and playing video games. His favorite are racing games, whether on nintendo wii, nintendo ds, or the computer. He's quite good at them, and has even been seen racing both players at the same time in a 2-player game on the computer.

Little Bitty is the "baby" of the family at almost 3 1/2 yrs old. He is great at puzzles and has been able to do the 24-36 piece puzzles since age 2. He loves ducks and trains, especially Thomas the Tank Engine. He also loves DVD's, not so much watching them but carrying around a stack of them that he can flip through and line up :). Lately he has taken an interest in coloring with color wonder markers, he is not a big fan of crayons.

Orion joined our family as a kitten when Bitty was almost a year old. He is really good with the boys. He doesn't like cat toys much, but he loves lids (bottle lids, etc.) and straws, and he stalks around the kitchen in hopes that someone will drop one. Other than that, he is arguably the most lazy cat in the universe. I swear whenever I see him he is just sleeping, and all he does is move from one spot to another to make it look like he did something in between.

Welcome!

Comments
Welcome to my blog - as the title says, I plan to use this to post the everyday adventures of my family and my random thoughts. I look forward to sharing our journey with others and hearing your thoughts as well.

In case you're curious, the reason I named this blog "3runningincircles" is because that's exactly what my three boys do! They are always running around the house in circles, sometimes chasing each other, sometimes just bumping into each other along the way.

More to come...
